For the spread bettor, this divergence creates opportunity. The market prices load management based on observed practice – teams sit stars, line moves accordingly. The market doesn’t fully price the question of whether load management actually accomplishes what its proponents claim. So games where a star is sitting purely for “rest” may have line moves that don’t reflect a genuine on-court advantage to the opposition – the rested star’s team plays better than the new line implies, because the rest wasn’t producing actual fitness benefit.

Backing the team-with-rested-star, when the line has moved heavily on news of a load management sit-out, is a contrarian play that occasionally pays. The maths is unkind to the consensus position when the consensus is built on shaky causal reasoning. I don’t make this play often, but when the load management is clearly cosmetic – a star sitting on a Tuesday in March against a struggling opponent – the spread on the rested team’s side sometimes offers genuine value.

Step three: compare the current line to where I’d expect it given the news. If the line hasn’t moved enough on a confirmed scratch, that’s a potential play. If the line has moved heavily on a designation that’s still soft (a “questionable” with no firm news), I’ll wait. If the line is roughly where I’d expect it given full information, no edge – pass.

The whole process takes 15 minutes once you’ve internalised it. The discipline isn’t difficult. The discipline is being willing to pass on games where the read isn’t clear, even when a friend has texted you about a “lock” he’s seen on the spread. Most NBA games most nights don’t offer load management edges. The good ones, when they appear, reward the patience of having waited for them.

Are bets voided if a star is announced out after the line is set?

No. UK book rules typically settle bets at the line in effect when the bet was placed. If you backed a team at -7 with the assumption the star would play, and the star is scratched after your bet, your spread stays at -7. The bookmaker doesn’t refund based on lineup changes. The exception is total game cancellation, which voids spread bets across the market.

How much does a back-up point guard typically shift the spread?

Depends on the gap between starter and back-up. A high-usage starting PG like a top-10 league assist leader typically shifts the line 2-3 points when scratched in favour of a third-string back-up.
